How you can break a negative relationship with money and boost your finances into the future
You know the story, pay day comes around but sooner than you’d like to admit, it’s gone and you’re starting to wonder, “why does it disappear so fast?!”
Take a look at how your parents and grandparents are around money. Are they savers or spenders? Do they have a balanced view or do they use money like being a tool? Do they think money is hard to earn and easy to spend? Chances are you’ve picked up on these habits. It’s difficult to change habits, especially around money and relationships. It’s because it’s so emotive and when you have strong emotions, the brain links them to experiences and they build neural pathways in the brain that are hard to break. These are unconscious blocks that affect your everyday dealings with money.
Everyone has unconscious patterning and blocks around money. This needs to be addressed and worked on to solve these issues long term. You need to take different action to get a new outcome.
Money blocks come from a variety of different areas. Partly it from your family, with the questions above giving you an insight into how your relationship with money has been shaped. It is also partly from your filters imposed on you as a young child. This is when your brain was really starting to establish rules and associations that keep you safe, alive and in survival mode. You keep replaying these behaviors all through your life as they are familiar and keep you safe and at the end of the day your surviving so you’re alive.
If you don’t address these then they will keep giving you grief through different stages of your life. It’s not your fault you aren’t aware of these blocks, after all, if they were conscious, you would have changed them!
So, it’s not your fault but it is your responsibility to take good care of money. You can break the bonds of these generational blocks.
The first physical and practical step is for you to have an awareness that you actually want to do or experience something different. It is possible to have a better experience around money and not be struggling all the time. You actually have to want something more for yourself.
The second step is actually taking responsibility for where you’re at. How bad is it really? Who is involved? Are you triggered to spend money at certain times – get into a bit of detail about this. Really write down what’s happening.

Essentially, the Rule of W tool asks you, What, Who, Where, When, Why and How, and then going deeper, what would this mean for you if you had these things in this way? Give it some detail and let the answers come to you easily.
From here making 30/60/90 day actions plans will help you to get outcomes and make changes. The key is to keep doing this process. YOU MUST TAKE consistent small actions. BIG outcomes come from resilience and keeping going to get to a place where habits are formed. Breaking the old habits can be hard work and sometimes you do need help. You can make a start and keep going. Small changes and being incredibly honest with yourself are the keys.
